Connor might have mud fever?!

14h, 8 year old, bay pony gelding. The FLO picked this horse up from an Indian Reservation and was told that he was wild. The FLO owner decided to hold him back for now, so he halter broke him. This guy is a little resistant to having the halter put on but once it is on, he walked calmly and obediently behind him.

I just had a vet look at my mare, Willow's legs and she also has mud fever/scratches. He said, though, that it is caused by the bacteria Staphylococcus aureus and needs therefore to be treated with a betadine scrub - anti-fungals won't work because it isn't a fungus. The betadine needs to be left on 10 minutes and then rinsed off. After the area is dry he said you can put on Desenex (yes, the diaper cream!) as a moisture barrier... just thought I'd let you know what he said - oh yes, and he said to try to keep the effected area(s) dry for 3 to 5 days (lol, in this weather!).

DO not mix iodine based products(betadine) with the anti-fungals!!!!!!! It causes a VERY nasty painful reaction!!!!! And while you should always err in deference to your vet not all scratches are the same. Some are fungal in nature. A few years ago we went on dozens of these calls and we cultured horses and while some were bacterial in nature- some were fungal. Keeping it dry, clipping, and letting air get to the skin in conjunction with what your vet recommends works really well no matter what is causing the problem.

My vet also cautioned me against using betadine. She said it was to drying to the skin and could be irritating. You need to keep it dry without drying out the skin, which could lead to cracking of the skin and a chance for more infection.
