Cantering Connor

14h, 8 year old, bay pony gelding. The FLO picked this horse up from an Indian Reservation and was told that he was wild. The FLO owner decided to hold him back for now, so he halter broke him. This guy is a little resistant to having the halter put on but once it is on, he walked calmly and obediently behind him.

Cantering Connor

Connor gets an A+ today in every single way. First of all, I put him outside with the whole herd (him and 5 mares...I didn't hear any complaints from him!) and he was easy to catch. Only turned and walked away from me once and then gave up.

Then I rode him and we cantered both directions and he was just perfect! I hadn't cantered him yet because he was still adjusting to arena riding (what? I have to turn? OHHHH...) and we were working on getting a really good rhythmic trot without any sudden stops or the neck craning off in the other direction to see who was in the other arena. Today he felt pretty solid and like he was paying attention so I decided to canter him. He is so comfortable. I mean, he is a couch. He has a big step for a pony but he is so FLAT, there's no bounce at all to his canter, you just glide right along. And he nailed both leads, no problems, no issues. He definitely feels more balanced going clockwise, but everybody has a better direction especially at first.

He is going to be the BEST pony ever for a kid who wants to do the pony club stuff and lower level eventing...I can totally see him charging along cross-country like a champ. That is going to be his idea of fun.

Seriously, if anybody reading this has a pony club kid...this is the pony you want. I can't get over what a nice pony this is. Just a superstar!

We are going to be looking for a pony for our soon to be Pony Club kid, my 10 year old daughter. We probably won't be officially buying until June, but Connor may be perfect for us. My daughter is an advanced beginner, I already own my own wonderful QH mare, we're moving up to Langley, BC, and are joining Pony Club there. I'm a follower of Natural Horsemanship, so would continue with that on the ground, my daughter is wanting to head in the direction of H/J. Maybe we'd be a good match?????
Also, she's currently in training with Julie, who just adopted Cassidy!

Thanks Cat for the update and for the pic of my kids.......I miss them but having you post on their progress and seeing pics makes it easier to be so far away from them.

dubbogod, talk to seahorse for sure...she wants the perfect home for him and I'm sure he could be boarded for a few more months until you're ready if it seems like the right match.

I think Connor would do fine for an advanced beginner who had a trainer. He is green but there just isn't a bit of mean in him anywhere. He is sweet, sweet, sweet and wants to please you. And so comfortable. Some lucky kid is going to be winning a lot of equitation classes on this pony - you can sit his extended trot!

Where is he boarded now? I'm in Bellevue, so we'd have to arrange to come visit him - he sounds perfect though. I'll PM seahorse. Thanks.
