Meeting the farrier!

15 year old 14hh sorrel Peruvian Paso gelding by Regalo de Dios, foaled June 1991. Amigo was gelded when he was 3 and was always easy to handle up until the last few years, where he has not been handled at all. SAFE is assisting his owners in finding him a new home.

Meeting the farrier!

My farrier, Dan, came out today to work on a bunch of the horses here at Serenity Training. While he was here, I was hoping he'd have a chance to work with Mi Amigo. As it turned out, we really didn't need alot of time for him, as he was one of the easiest horses to trim!

I was able to catch Mi Amigo in his paddock within about 2 minutes. We decided to go ahead and trim him in his paddock, mostly to lessen any stress he might be under, but also because it was easier that way.

After being introduced to Dan, Mi Amigo immediately complied to his request and picked up his hooves. He wasn't the best about holding them up, but seemed reassured when Dan didn't react to his fears and just calmly went about his business.

I think we had Mi Amigo trimmed (all 4 hooves) in just over a half hour! He wasn't very happy about it, but he tolerated us! What a very good boy!!!

What a good boy! I must say the experience is a little different than the first trim he got through SAFE. That one was quite an experience. He looks like he has relaxed a lot in just a couple of days.

Yes, he's relaxed alot! However, I finally got a taste of the Mi Amigo I've been hearing about this evening! ROFL

I'll post shortly, but let's just say a harmless session turned into a 2 hour round pen session. I won, in the end, and learned alot, but boy, do we have a road to travel!

Okay - I'll admit it...I'm laughing a bit. Mi Amigo has tons of spirit...I guess he just waited a bit to show you how much!

But he is a thinker - I love the look in his eyes when Dan is trimming him. A lot is going on in there.

I'm glad he bonded so quickly with the other horses. He is so used to his herd, I felt bad taking him away.
