How long for Quarantine?

Postby Juliane on Wed Feb 07, 2007 11:11 am

This is something I am going to be asking the vet tomorrow, but today marks the 2 week mark that Buddy has been here. While he came from a facility with an extreme deadly case of Strangles (and who knows what else), he is not showing any signs of being ill.

His nose and eye is clear, his lymph nodes are not swollen and he is alert (and getting much more active). He is displaying is displeasure with being cooped up in a small paddock and I'm starting to feel sorry for him.

I'm sure that will abate some after tomorrow's intense surgery and as he recovers, but I still would like to know what you all think the right length of time for QT is? My original thought was 60 days minimum, due to the severity of the illness at his old facility. However, now I'm wondering if 45 days or 30 days would be sufficient.

Of course, it's not worth the risk to endanger any of the horses in my barn, so maybe I should stick with the initial 60 days? Is that even long enough if he is in fact a carrier?

My vet told me a MINIMUM of 30 days when I got my mare from the feedlot and there was not any cases of strangles while she was there. Personally, I would wait at least 45 days and then have him cultured just to make sure!!

I just QT'd Baby Ruth(Sione) for 90 days and had a swab done. I didnt want to take any chances. Its pretty scary, I've seen posts where some Vets recommended 6 months.

I did 90 days for Tanner and just two weeks ago was he allowed into a pen where he could touch other hores. Now he's in LOVE. I think the longer the better with this stuff.
