You can be assured that no one here would consider you a "horse-trader". We all know that you are a horse-saver.
Asking for a small adoption fee, with an adoption contract and right of first refusal would be a sensible thing to do. Consider it as a starting balance for the next poor soul you take on.

Ok, I will split the difference :) I will ask a $250 adoption fee for Buddy. This will cover my outstanding vet balance that I have for Sydney. I will also have a 'first right of refusal' option in the contract.

Luckily, so far most my adopted horse's owners have also turned into friendships that I maintain even after the horse has moved - so it's been easy to track their progress or help with potential problems. Hopefully that will be the case with Buddy too! :)

Good. I am so glad you have seen it "our" way

$250 is a very reasonable price to pay for that beautiful creature who turned from a duckling into a swan thanks to you.

I'll send the $25 for you to use on one of the other horses then.
