Buddy is home

Postby mariah on Mon Jun 18, 2007 7:47 pm

Well Buddy arrived at his new home Sunday. I took some pics, but am not able to get them on my computer yet. I think maybe my USB port is not working. Darn old computer anyway.
He was a little upset the first evening, but didn't go crazy. He walked around looking for another horse and winnied alot, and ate grass like he was on a mission and very nervous. I tried playing a bit and work on some ground work, but I realized it was not happening so got him to do a couple of rounds and let him go. He walked around and ate more grass.
I got up this morning and started my jeep, I was late for work, and he came up to the fence. I gave him some senior feen petted him and talked to him for just a minute until I had to run to work.
When I got home I wandered across the entire field to see if he was calmer and when I was almost there he came to me. Of course I had some grain. Then he went back to eating grass. I came all the way back to the house and got the halter and lead rope, and another handful of grain. Then I walked all the way across the field and had no trouble catching him. His whole body seemed much calmer than yesterday and I did not have to hold him down. He followed right along beside me all the way back to the house.
I decided to go a little farther and do some ground work. He did wonderful :D. He is still a little nervous of the new sounds but is calming rapidly. He didn't want to go inside the new shed my husband built him so I did a little coaxing and in he went. Now he has been wandering in and out for the past half hour. He is such a fast learner. I wanted today to be a pleasant experience for him so I just spent time talking to him and petting him and leaning on him while he ate. I love him sooooo much.
Juliane took some pics when she dropped him off she will probably get them posted when she has a chance I know she is very busy worrying and getting settled.

Thanks for the update, Mariah! I was really worried about Buddy and how he'd settle in. I think it's going to be really good for him to gain some confidence from his 'person' and not from the other horses in the herd. Please keep us updated! I'll post pics later - I don't have my camera with me right now. Sorry! :)

P.S. That dinner you sent with me on Sunday night was the BEST EVER!!! I need the recipe for your lasagna, please! Oh, and the little ribbon tied around the silverware was SO CUTE! It was portable fine dining at it's best! Thank you so much!

Mariah

So happy to hear that he's doing well at home. It was great to meet you at Julie's last week. Rex and I both think that you and Buddy are a perfect match! :D

Have fun!

We went for a ride!

Postby mariah on Wed Jun 20, 2007 2:26 pm

I started off with the intention of walking him- with saddle and bridle- I got tired of walking about halfway down the road. So I got on and he stood perfectly. We went down the road and turned off onto a trail. There was a bit of stagnant nasty water that he did everything to avoid but with persistence and calming words he rushed over it. hahaha We went down the trail a bit and turned around and rushed back through it with less resistance. We went by some miniature ponies and he was all excited omg another pony or maybe he thought it was a dog. It was a great ride. I am going to ride again on Friday. I am definately keeping him. We are great together.

Sounds like a great first ride!

I suspect he's actually better as an only horse, since he gets so overly bonded when he does have a friend. This way he just has YOU to bond with, which is probably ideal for him!
