Lazy Buddy LOL

Postby mariah on Wed Nov 14, 2007 9:34 pm

Yesterday I had a little time so we went for a ride. He was so lazy. I kicked him and he would not move, I slapped him on the butt and he just stood there like nothing hapened. I kept trying to get him to walk and he just swished his tail. I got off and tried walking, he took one step and just stretched his neck and yawned. I checked the saddle and his feet, legs, everything was fine. A little while later while I was trying to figure out his problem a couple other horses walked by, then he was walking and going and trotting etc. I had a bit of a difficult time after they went the other way, but got him going eventually. It took forever and was dark when we finally got home. After we got to the road I kicked him a little harder and he was trotting, woohoo!!! I think he misses having a buddy. I hope to get him one when I get done with school. So does anyone have any suggestions on what I can do to get him walking? I didn't think I would have this with him.

Hey Mariah!

Thought i'd chime in...

Whenever I ran into an issue with Buddy, I'd always address it on the ground. Julie and I realized rather quickly that he had some issues getting into a trot with a rider on his back, so I helped him figure it out on the ground first. That seemed to help like night and day, giving him what he needed to succeed under saddle.

maybe try a couple of in-hand sessions...stand next to the saddle and ask him to trot by using you hand where your leg pressure would be.

He was great about trotting away from the house.... When we were out on the trail he just stopped... I could ge him to walk on the ground and he would trot too... As soon as I got back on he would take a few seps and just stand there...
