Back to work! (A prize ride for Shadow)

So, Shadow hasn't had much work done to him since a week or two ago and Rex's accident. I worked with him for a few days after that incident, but then got busy with the colt starting clinic and then school starting, etc.

However, yesterday I decided to go to the Tahoma Backcountry Horseman trail ride in Maple Valley. I figured it would be a good opportunity to pony Shadow along to get him back into the mode of being worked.

But, instead of putting my regular Circle Y saddle on him that I usually use, I decided to use Rex's Circle Y which also has a rear cinch. I have used this saddle on Shadow before, but not in a long time. So, he wasn't used to having the rear cinch on him - which caused us to have a few moments of bucking at the end of the leadrope before we set out.

I sent him back and forth to get him working, and eventually he worked out of it, but again on the trails when we passed another group of riders, he went to bucking. This boy is definitely at the point in his training (or lack of) that he needs consistant work. I've done him a disservice by not working with him for the past week and a half or so. :(

Once he was warmed up though, he was great on the trails. He's a fairly easy horse to pony, though at times prefers to crawl right up in your lap, so maintaining your space boundaries are important with him. LOL!

I do believe that he has a sore back and am trying to get Dr. Hannah Evergreen to look at him sometime in the next week. Once I am sure of that, I'm going to try getting back in the saddle. But in the meantime, I think the most important thing he needs right now is the desensitization exercises with the flag, tarp and other scary stuff. He's a laid back boy most of the time, but can tense up at the silliest stuff.

Here's a few pics from yesterday:
