Time to meet the farrier!

This gorgeous black stud was part of the bucking stock string that was at the Yakima Feedlot in December. Will enter training the beginning of May 2006.

Time to meet the farrier!

Rory hasn't had his feet trimmed, possibly ever, but definitely not since he was rescued from the feedlot in January. His feet are long, but nothing like you would expect a horse's hooves that have lacked farrier care for over 6 months.

I have been working with Rory as much as possible to desensitize him to touch to his legs, feet and hopefully, holding his feet up. We haven't gotten as far as I'd like, but my farrier, Dan, is amazing with the rescues I've had. He is coming out next week so that we can work with Rory and hopefully get him trimmed! I'll be sure to take plenty of pictures!

Here is a picture of his hooves last night. Not too bad, but definitely long. No cracks or chips, so we're ok so far!

Rory met with my farrier, Dan, today. Dan spent almost an hour doing groundwork with Rory, desensitizing him to the idea of touch to his legs and feet. Before long, Rory was holding up his feet and allowing Dan to trim them. We only got his front feet done today - simply because we ran out of time and it seemed like it might be too much for Rory to deal with. We wanted to end on a good note, and felt with the successful trims of his front feet, that was a good day's work. I also have homework to do with Rory to prepare him for Dan's next trip out in a week or so.

Here's some pics from today - Rory's very first trim job (as far as I know).

Dan is priceless. Is he married? A farrier would be good for a horsey girl.

LOL Dan is not married. But we've been good friends for a long time. I'm not about to screw that up by getting involved with him :P
