Tired of training, let's play instead!

This gorgeous black stud was part of the bucking stock string that was at the Yakima Feedlot in December. Will enter training the beginning of May 2006.

Tired of training, let's play instead!

It's not like Rory has been in hard core training anyways, but I woke up today with a severe headache and not even desiring to do any kind of training. I didn't want to do groundwork, I didn't want to attempt to get on an unbroke horse, nothing. I just wanted to get on and hit the trails.

Good ol' Rory-man hasn't been ridden since our beach trip a week ago, so I figured it was time for him to try the trails. Ironically, while we didn't do any "training", he learned a TON today.

My roommate, Bobbie, and I trailered out to Fall City today to go on the public trails. Rory was perfect about everything, from loading and unloading, to standing tied while I saddled him, etc. He was perfect, as always. :) He let me clean his front feet without any problem and even let me pick up his back feet and clean them a bit. This was a big step for him! I also put splint boots on him, which he didn't mind at all.

This guy is incredibly unflappable. Once saddled, I had him go around me in circles once or twice. This likely isn't necessary, but it reassures me that he knows what's coming. I mounted up and we headed out to the trails. We had to cross a busy 2-lane highway to get to the trails - I was a bit nervous on how he would do with this but had no problem. There is an equestrian crossing, so the cars stopped for us as we crossed the roadway. What a good boy!

Once in the trails, we had to step over bridges, go through gates, jump over logs, push through brush, etc. He never had a problem with anything. Well, that's not totally true. He did spook for about 30 seconds when we were just getting on the trails - he was spooking at his OWN SHADOW! LOL I couldn't help but laugh at him. He quickly and easily got over it - his spook consisted of sidestepping a couple steps, stopping, looking at it, and then moving on. What a goofball!

The main trail had a lot of course gravel - Rory was a bit tender-footed on this. It was the first time I've seen him be tender on rocky surfaces. Poor guy. I ended up getting off and walking beside him when we were on that trail, but otherwise, I rode when we were on the narrow dirt trails.

When we were done riding the trails, we headed back to where I had parked, which was next to the arena. There was a gaming playday event going on with tons of horse and rider combinations. There was also a gentleman on the loud speaker calling out times and names. Rory never had an issue with any of it.

We went down to the river so they could get a drink of water, then headed back to my truck. Once unsaddled, we let the horses graze in the grass before trailering home.

Rory is such a good boy! I have been incredibly lucky to work with him! He would make *any* trainer look good!

Here's some pics from today!
