Rory's 2nd farrier visit

This gorgeous black stud was part of the bucking stock string that was at the Yakima Feedlot in December. Will enter training the beginning of May 2006.

Rory's 2nd farrier visit

Postby Juliane on Thu Aug 17, 2006 10:38 pm

Rory met with Dan, my farrier, this evening for the second time. Last time, Dan worked with him for a long time on the ground, before even being able to pick up his feet, and that was his front feet only. We never got to his back feet! Today, Rory easily picked up his front feet for Dan. He was bit more fearful of his back feet and took some round penning before he trusted Dan enough to tolerate it. Dan was very good with Rory and extremely patient, even when Rory kept leaning on Dan when his right hind foot was picked up.

When he was done and I took him back down the street, he was very tender still, much like he was on the trail ride the other day. We didn't put shoes on Rory, so now I'm wondering if he'll be ok for the prize ride. I don't know what the terrain is like. Has anybody ever used those rubber easy boots for horses? I'm sure if I put two of those on his front feet, he'd be fine.

Here's some pics of the Rory-man tonight:

Hi Julianne, I've used Old Mac boots for my mare A LOT!!! If Dan is familiar with them, she wears a size 3. I have a full set of that size and since Henna is currently shod all around, I don't need them for this ride. I use them in the winter when I have her barefoot. I can bring them if they will fit him (her feet are pretty small, if Rory's feet are big for his size they may work)

What I've noticed is my mare is MORE confident on rocky trails when using the boots. She just plows thru any footing with them. A little high-stepping when I first started using them with her, but she really seems comfortable in them.

Since I'm already skipping out on the family stuff in favor of the ride tomorrow, I have no way to get them to you tonight to try them out, unless you have someone who will be in the Issaquah area and can pick them up? You are more than welcome to use them for as long as you need to if they fit, I won't be pulling her shoes off until probably Nov.

They are pricey... about $145/pair last time I looked, so better if you can borrow some!

Youch! Those are spendy. Rory has fairly good size feet for his size. I don't know what size they are though. I should have asked Dan to check. I would love to borrow your boots! I will be in the Issaquah area around 5-6pm tonight, but after that I need to head home and get everything ready for tomorrow..

What time can you meet? Thanks so much for the offer! That is very generous!

I get home around 5:30, depending on traffic. Boots are at the house since I did not read the posting until I got to work! So, are you able to meet me there? I can plan to leave work in Seattle early so I'm sure to be there by then. Or, I can drive down to Issaquah and meet you after I go home to pick up the boots.

Also 1 pair has pastern wraps that came with them which might help with the fit.

If that does not work, I for sure will have them at the ride, but it might be better if you can try them tonight first! Rory will probably take to them with no problem, he's such a sensible guy!

Thanks Karen! :) I can come by your house later, around 5:30-6pm if that works for you :) I need to stop by the Grange first. Can you email me directions to your house again? juliane@serenitytraining.com

Thank you SO much!!
