One of these days....

This striking 12 year old paint gelding was a bucking stock stallion for all of his life until a couple of days ago. He is now on the road to recovery and trust as he learns that not all humans are bad!

One of these days....

....Ace and I are going to go for a ride! :D

But for now, we take it very slowly, building on what we learned at the Colt Starting Clinic last summer. However, with the winter weather, short days, we haven't done much. Ok, we haven't done anything! LOL

Trish was here today working with Wynona, so I took the opportunity of having someone with me, as well as a somewhat dry day to revisit Ace's and my goal of a riding partnership. I pulled the Ace Man out and took him to the round pen. With all of the wet weather we have had lately, the ground is very soft and muddy in places - including the round pen.

I brushed Ace down, taking my time to get all of his dirty spots. Then, I went over to one of the rails on the round pen and climbed up, just like I had at the clinic. I spent the next half hour smothering Ace with loves and praise, as I sat on him, laid on him and hugged him. He was pretty nervous at first, but eventually relaxed more than he has before.

He's pretty funny though - when I am on him, it's as though he doesn't trust himself to move or pay attention to anything but me being on his back. A few times I asked him to reach around and look at me - that was very hard for him. I had so much fun with Ace today - I can't wait to play with him again!

I fully believe we'll be riding this summer! :) Here's a few pics - special thanks to Trish for taking them! :) (and for being there for me today!)

This pics is hilarious - when I was done 'riding' Ace today, I took him up to the barn to put a new blanket on him, since his was badly ripped. As soon as I went to bring him into the pasture, he stopped and reached over and yanked one of the bags of grain so hard, that he ripped it completely open. What a goofball! I love seeing his personality come out!

Wow, Julie!!! I am soo excited to see you on Ace! You look so happy up there. I fully believe you will be riding him soon! I just can't wait to see that!
You have done such an amazing thing with him! I know Ace loves you and trusts you. I could see that when we were up there for Christmas. Just the look in his eye when he looks at you.
Excited for You!!!

Ace looks so great. A far different horse than when I came up with Dana to get Lance.

And is that an airplane in the background of that one picture.???

Great job!! I love the first picture. :D

It'll be a very special moment when the time comes that the two of you are riding together - even more special then the first time you sat on his back. :)

You know, I bet that if you were able to get him really used to ponying off of Dandy or whoever, that you would be able to easily transition that into riding him. He isn't upset about your being up there, but it'd be great to ease him into carrying a rider without adding leg aids or the need to steer right away, you know? You could just make it really easy for him...start off with just carrying you and not having to think and then slowly ease into being actively ridden.

He is such a lovely horse and he's so sweet...I remember meeting him over a year ago and even though he was much more timid then, his true personality was apparent.
