Does she, or doesn't she, know how to lunge?

Does she, or doesn't she, know how to lunge?

The first day that Natalie and I worked with Margie, we were unable to get her to lunge. Today, I pulled her out to see if she really didn't know what to do, or if she was just playing dumb. It turns out she does know how to lunge, and is actually VERY responsibe to body language - almost too much so! I noticed her stopping a few times because I wasn't paying attention to how I was presenting myself to her :P

Anyhow, It did take me holding the lunge whip in my hand to encourage her to move out. Once she did, we were on our way. I only lunged her for about 10 minutes total, but was able to see her canter finally. Wow! What a rocking horse canter!

After I was done lunging her, we worked on joining up. She followed me around the arena as I walked serpentines, stopping occaisionally. She was SO good :)

Then, of course, I had to force myself on her since she *hates* any public displays of affection :P

Boy, she sure had everybody fooled, didn't she. I wonder why. Do you suppose she was just so stressed at the feedlot that she acted like an unhandled horse?

I'm not sure.. But I can see that she will quickly revert when not worked with. She comes out of her shell more and more each day, but I believe if I didn't do anything more than feed her for the next 2 weeks, she would be very standoffish and "wild".

She is also the type of mare that very much feeds off her environment. The feedlot gives off a pretty major amount of negative energy. I think my place lets her feel at home, relaxed, loved and positive :) At least, I like to think that :P
